Dissecting the Barbie (2023) Trailer + Predicting the Plot
People are talking so much about the new Barbie movie trailer that I started to wonder if it was all an elaborate advertisement, but also, knowing that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are in this thing (and Greta Gerwig is directing) I guess I can understand the hype. Anyway, I watched the trailer and then also felt compelled to add to the Barbie (2023) hype with my own thoughts on the teaser/trailer, but ALSO adding in my plot predictions for the movie because I have some ideas on where Ms. Gerwig will be taking us, hehe. Personally, I think the Barbie I am most excited for is Issa Rae's "President Barbie", and if you're reading this, then be sure to let me know your favorite in the comments! I'm excited to talk Barbie with you all :^)

I Watched Lord of the Rings for the First Time

Hiii everyone! As you can see, I watched The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) (directed by Peter Jackson) for the first time recently. I actually watched all three of the LOTR movies in the trilogy, but it just so happened that when I sat down to talk about it, I only managed to get through the first one before I realized I had been talking about hobbits and elves and orcs and T...
The Epic Downfall of Walter White

I finally watched the hit AMC show Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan and starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. And honestly, I'm kind of obsessed. It really was as good as the hype! But one of the aspects of Breaking Bad that fascinated me the most was the arc of Walter White - or lack there of, maybe. I wanted to further explore how Walt was able to go from high school chemistry teache...

Also, even though it came out in 2014, I didn't actually watch it for the first time until last year (2021). Can you believe that?...
Can We Kill the Final Girl Trope Already?

Listen, we've all heard about the final girl. I was into the idea too, but I think we got the idea already! Plus, does anyone else know that they would probably be the first person to d1e in a horror movie anyway? Like I would not survive. So what about the girl that d1es first in the horror movie? Justice for the mean bimbo character! Or the butch character! Or anyone that's not the final girl...
What Makes the Slasher Telephone Call So Terrifying
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
We've all seen the now iconic opening scene of Wes Craven's horror movie classic Scream 1996, where Drew Barrymore is going back and forth on the phone with her would-be killer. But how many of us have really stopped to think about just how common of a horror trope the slasher telephone call really is? Why does the trope continue to pop up in pop culture? And what makes the slasher telephone ca...

I am watching this video for the first time, and am only at 2 minutes, but the intro already resonates with me a lot. There is a True Crime Podcast that exists in various translations, and I used to listen to the German one. It was a very factual, straight to the point thing. The English original had a few different topics, so I decided to check that one out as well. When I tell you I was shocked by it. It started with a POV retelling of the crime, like a fanfiction. I was so appaulled by it. And it surprised me just how different and better the German version of it was. Truly baffling. Edit: I have watched the whole video now and want to expand on my comment. The German version of the Podcast does have moody music, but it feels more like someone is reading a wikipedia entry to you, rather than a fanfiction. They expand on the lives of the victims, of their current situations at the time etc., humanizing them. This was the kind of true crime stuff I interacted with, and when I started watching video essays of this sort on true crime it was absolutely shocking to me that people interacted so carelessly with these stories, that others who "enjoy" true crime enjoy it not like a wikipedia entry but like a fanfiction (not to mention those videos where people do their make up or something while talking about it, I don't understand how people can genuinely trust them to tell the order of events etc. accurately). Either way, I have stopped interacting with true crime content a long time ago, and seeing things such as the Jeffrey Da hmer series on Netflix make me sick to my stomach. I genuinely wish people would be more conscious not just about what they consume, but also how they consume it. (And I hope Evan Peters gets to play more light-hearted roles like Quicksilver again in the future.)

Honestly, I don't think I would have cared that Jess and Jules (I hope those were their names) aren't lesbians had there not been that whole side plot about the mother thinking that Jules is a lesbian and that she and Jess are together. When I tell you I went to bed and cried about this movie after I saw it because of how homophobic that mother was… as a teen who was questioning her identity at that time, it was a real punch in the gut because the movie was definitely hinting at them being lesbians. There's the scene where they look like they kiss, they generally have great chemistry, even the mother thinks they are together. And then it seems to turn into a lecture about "how not all tomboys are lesbians and girls who play soccer can also be straight" which honestly just feels condescending to me. It felt like queerbaiting us and then lecturing us for being baited by it. And while the mother is never depicted as being right about how much the idea of a lesbian daughter destroys her, there is never a satisfactory victory over her and as a teen girl that just really intensified my fear of ever coming out, thinking that my parents might react like that. (But I really liked the movie! It was a good movie, that's the problem with it. It just really ripped my heart out and stomped on it)

I see their relationship different I think needy was leaning Jennifer on. I think Jennifer was in love with Nini and that is not nice. She keep leading her on. She needs to get over chip that is absolutely ridiculous that she’s obsessed with her and I heard that they weren’t even dating that long, so so why are you in love with him? I’m not getting it complete. Someone explained to me, how in love when she’s only been dating him a little bit I mean she is so mean to Jennifer I feel bad I put up with that I punch you in her face so rude I mean it’s just awful. Why why did she put up with it I wouldn’t.

Even tho jasmine is half Indian half Arab, she lives in Arabic palace and country so it would made zero sense if she would have wear Indian wedding lehengas all the time. But I highly agree that her dresses was bad. They could hire someone Middle Eastern. As a Turkish person and people say yeah its ottoman and stuff we was not dresssing like this it was way different. Its just having the same vibe. all the dresses of jasmine in the movie was looking like its from toysr us

Gotta admit, my first or second time watching the movie I always thought the dynamic of their relationship was Jennifer’s insecurity being the only reason why she remained friends with Needy. The whole pretty friend hanging with less attractive friends to look better by comparison thing. There definitely is that theme at certain points throughout the movie but the more prominent is simply Jennifer wanting what she can’t have. (it’s Needy in case you couldn’t figure it out) She goes after the guys Needy likes, doesn’t care about a guy until Needy points out that she thinks they are cute, always wants Needy’s time & attention then gets upset when other people have it instead of her. Whether or not she wanted Needy as a friend or something more, I don’t believe the movie gave enough to form a definitive answer about that. If she really wanted Needy as more than a friend, then why would she be so interested to see that band at the beginning of the movie and talk about how hot they are. I think the movie plays with the idea of Needy & Jennifer but doesn’t commit to it, so it’s really impossible to say that they had or ever were supposed to have a romantic relationship

i have only watched the 1984 anime. i heavily disliked the romance aspects of both the sakurakoji and masumi arcs and how they got way more screen time than they deserved. masumi was pretty creepy, to his defence he never acted on his feelings because he recognised they were wrong and his act on being a heartless man was interesting. sakurakoji on the other hand stopped being interesting once he ran away instead of supporting maya and his scenes were dragged on for way too long. the romance between maya and ayumi was the best part, although it was only hinted and not explored. ayumi really is the best character imo, and it's a shame she doesn't get more development. the anime feels in this sense a bit like ace wo nerae. ochofujin and ayumi are similar characters. todou is a much better version of sakurakoji. oni-coach has a little bit of masumi and tsukikage, although he is also much much better as a character. both protagonists also have a great supportive side character friend. but unlike in ace wo nerae, the protagonist maya herself is at times hard to sympathise with. i think that's the worst aspect of the anime.

I personally really disagree with the "they were in love" take. Them being bisexual is one thing that's pretty established along the film, but Jennifer is the villain here. She has always seen and treated Needy as a possession, someone that does as she says or can be manipulated into doing so, and in that context it's impossible to say you're in love with someone you dont give any agency to.

I have always been interested in true crime, but I stick with creators who seem to care about the victims' lives and thise they left behind, cover lesser known cases, examine facts, and give details about investigations, trials, and analysis of media coverage. Bundy always scared me precisely because of how he feigned needing help to draw people in, and get them to let down their guard. He never seemed charming. He seemed like a shitty person who preyed on the good will of others. Knowing about what he did makes me less eager to help others and I hate that.

I’ve been friends with a girl, well not just a girl she’s the bestest friend I’ll ever have, and when we were younger our whole friendship started over fighting over the affection of one girl(Ikr, so gay we didn’t even realize it 😂) and eventually she told us we could all three be besties instead of just two of us, and that was how it began. In the beginning, and throughout a large chunk of our childhood, my bestie was emotionally abusive. I was used to this at home already so it didn’t seem weird or different to me at all. She was my rock, and I often stayed over at her house(Her parents were always very kind to me and treated me like the second child they couldn’t have, I love them) to escape my own home life. Around the time we entered middle school I became emotionally dependent on her FULLY. She was my rock, y’know? Even if she was kinda also my bully, I loved her then and still do today. But I ended up moving away during our second year of middle school, and it broke my heart. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was in love with my best friend, this was my first real heartbreak and it went deep. We remained long-distance friends and still did our lil rp chats(god, we were soap opera writing geniuses back then 😂). It wasn’t until a year later that I discovered the meaning of Bisexual, and that I fit the description. I freaked out so badly, that I went no-contact with her. I was so scared that she would hate me or view me differently that I broke my own heart a second time. I will never forgive myself for putting her through that. It was freshmen year when I logged back onto Skype, and she messaged me right away apologizing profusely about how she treated me. I didn’t understand, I was the one who went no-contact with HER, I was the asshole. She explained to me that she did some real soul searching and realized a lot of things while we were no-contact. For one, we both realized that a lot of our friendship was her putting me down to raise herself up, and I just never knew it was wrong. I apologized for going no-contact but I was too cowardly to tell her the truth so I lied, but we started talking again and I was just happy that we could rekindle our friendship. As adults, she ended up confessing that she is Bi and was kind of in love with me in middle school, this was LONG after I had moved on and I’m actually engaged to my fiancé now. I truly believe he is the one for me, but I always wonder what might’ve happened is my Bestie and I had realized our feelings sooner. But I’m happy we were able to work through it and stay friends ❤

I do have to say we ( georgians )are not thaat uncommon with western culture especially now but if we are talking about like a century ego and before that yes all of that is very true, we are pretty warm people when it comes to friendships and we often express it with touch for example when i was in summer school year ago i did notice that french and american people compered to us + turkey ( bc thats the experience i had to be exact) are very cold, For example my american friend was less warm in the touch and hugging matter and french like even my teacher told me ( whos french ) that when she came to georgia she was so amazed and confused to by why friends where tying eachothers’ shoe leases bc in France they consider it as like putting someone down or yk what i mean basically I also do have to say this part of the world and culture tend sto be pretty homophobic and racist sadly so its not all roses and peaches or however the saying goes😂 ( english isnt my first language so i apologize if i wrote something bit unclearly), But yeah it was really nice to hear my country get mentioned in such interesting topic so thank you!
